My Functional Transformation

In mid October 2022 I tried a yoga method I had not previously heard of called Kaiut Yoga. Since that time, I have completed 160 classes. I know the exact number because I use their app which has 100 unique classes on it. I was instructed to do 1-100 and then 100-1. So it's easy to know exactly how many classes I’ve done.

I would like to acknowledge myself for completing 160 classes in the last 14 months. Hooray for me.

Although I have been physically active throughout my life, skiing, swimming, playing tennis, walking, biking, hiking, weight training and doing Bikram Yoga, I have rarely exhibited the level of discipline and commitment to regularly doing something physical as frequently and for as long as I have with Kaiut Yoga.

Francisco Kaiut, a Brazilian chiropractor, created Kaiut Yoga  to help him deal with his pain from a shooting accident he was in as a five year old.

The first thing I did was take a couple classes online as I was able to locate a few classes on YouTube. Then once I decided it was worth further exploration, I downloaded Kaiut's app onto my phone. There I learned that the first step is to listen to a number of videos where Francisco explains about his method of yoga.

In those videos I learned that his method is designed to reprogram our parasympathetic nervous system to enable our bodies to regain our natural range of motion that we had when we were young. If you watch children play you know what he’s talking about. I also learned that his method is focused on increasing range of motion in the planter girdles (our ankles), hip girdles and our shoulder girdles. Having previously had shoulder issues (one on each shoulder in successive years just before Covid), I wonder if I would have avoided my torn labrum and frozen shoulder had I been doing Kaiut yoga beforehand.

So why have I persisted in completing 160 classes? Results.

I’ve been dealing with lower back issues for over 40 years. As a 22-year-old it was so bad that my father suggested I go see Dr. Moyer at Temple Sports Medicines, who was the Eagles' physician at the time. He said. “the only thing I’d recommend is surgery but given your age, I wouldn’t suggest it.” “Don’t worry,” I said, “I will not let you cut me open.” A wise choice on my part. Turns out I had a pinched sciatica and the pain went all the way down my left leg. Using chiropractic I was able to resolve that. However, my low back has been vulnerable to easy injury ever since. Not good for a physically active person like me.

Since I started Kaiut Yoga, my low back has improved significantly, making range of movement much easier for me as well as needing fewer chiropractic treatments. Similarly, my neck has improved greatly after having had whiplash from two skiing falls and at least one concussion from a fall at work during a summer blue collar job. Not only does my neck adjust easier by my chiropractor, but my range of motion has improved significantly.

I’ve had my current car for seven and a half years. It has an excellent back-up camera and as a result, I stopped turning around to back up, I just used the back-up camera. It’s been terrific until it started working intermittently (as electronics often do in  old cars). It was then I noticed a more limited range of motion in my body when I had to turn around to back up. In the last year however, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my body’s ability to rotate to assist me in merging and/or backing up, without the camera, all as a result of Kaiut Yoga.

I have seen significant improvement in muscle definition on my body, in my calves, quads, forearms, and stomach.

My grip strength has improved dramatically. How do I know? Every morning I start my day with 20oz of warm lemon water. I have been using the same lemon press to juice ½ a lemon for several years. Then it happened, I broke the lemon press by squeezing it too hard. The good news is it had a lifetime warranty, so they replaced it. Wife happy, until I broke the new one, in less than two months of use. Oops, another warranty claim. Clearly, that press would no longer serve me. So I started using our slightly smaller lime press we have which is made of steel. I have not broken it, phew.

I am clearly standing taller. If you know me you might say how’s that possible, you are already  6’4”. Well father time and gravity gets to all of us, I’m no exception. While I may have lost a ½” of height over the years, after taking on this Kaiut Yoga practice I clearly feel a greater ease and comfort in my body standing (as well as sitting for that matter).

All the physical work I do around the house had gotten easier: yard work, washing cars and carrying and stacking firewood.

Apparently, my father-in-law has noticed a change as well. The last couple times he’s seen me he said “look how thin you are, you must be losing weight.” I'm actually up 6 pounds (clearly I haven't exhibited the same commitment when it comes to what I've been putting in my mouth) but the change in my posture and definition has made me look leaner. .

As a new ski season approaches I’m excited to see and feel the impact Kaiut Yoga has on my body while skiing. This is a big one for me as I have a goal to ski at 85. If I achieve that goal, I will have skied for 80 years, almost as long as I have walked. I have three ski trips planned and another one in the works.

So lets recap where Kaiut Yoga had impacted me; lower back ✔, neck ✔, body rotation ✔,  range of motion ✔, muscle tone ✔, muscle definition ✔, muscle strength ✔, grip strength ✔, standing taller ✔, looking leaner ✔, requiring fewer chiropractic visits ✔, a greater sense of calm emotionally, mentally and physically ✔.

Clearly a Functional Transformation.

If you are looking to improve your physical functionality as you age, I strongly endorse and suggest you explore Kaiut Yoga. I think today you can download the app for two weeks for free. Just enough time to view all the Kaiut 101 videos to learn about his method and to complete three to four classes per week for two weeks. I’m confident that if you do this, you will know if Kaiut Yoga is right for you. If you need more time, just pay for the app monthly and cancel if it doesn’t work for you.

Kaiut Yoga is not designed to make you stretchy . Nor does it rely on familiar yoga poses like Triangle, Downward Dog, or Warrior I or II . It is designed to regain the range of motion we naturally lose as we injure our bodies and age. Feel free to reach out to me if you want to discuss or have questions.

I’d like to thank Francisco Kaiut for creating his yoga method and putting it out in the world for me and so many others to benefit from.

My biggest thank you goes to my friend and colleague, Shakti Dudley who introduced Kaiut Yoga to me. With great respect, admiration and appreciation, Thank you Shakti.

May 2024 bring you the Health, Happiness, Peace and Joy you seek.
